Cat Tail AmputationIt's been a traumatic 24 hours in our house - especially for Tom.

Yesterday there was an incident involving my mother, Tom and the front door and, well, let's just say Tom's about 4 inches shorter in length then he was when he woke up yesterday.

We spent the afternoon at the emergency vet (an absolutely amazing place with such caring people) and were reassured that his injury was very common in cats and that the vet had performed numerous amputations, or what my husband is referring to as a "tail-ectomy."

Tom came home last night just a little out of sorts from the anesthesia, angry about the uncomfortable collar he has to wear for 10 days and absolutely unable to find a good place to sleep the entire night. We're all a little groggy this morning...

He seems to be resting comfortably now on my desk but his sister Bella is hissing at him - I guess she doesn't recognize him with his fancy new Elizabethan collar!

The vet says he'll be totally fine and his tail will look normal when the hair grows back - I just hope he doesn't remember how it got to be shorter. I'm certainly trying hard to forget the whole thing!

Re: The Tale of the Tail

The tail of woe !. How's mom ! Tom will be okay. Once his hair grows back, he won't even realize he is shorter. But give Tom a love scratch for me.

Re: The Tale of the Tail

So sorry to hear about the accident. Sounds like you had great vets who took care of him and he'll be fine. My lil Stubs was born with a bent tail. They say that happens at the end when the mom gets tired of pushing them out. I caught her chewing on it and to avoid further incident, when she was spayed we had it amputated. They cut as high up as they could. So her whole life her tail has been half the size of her brother and sister but it has been a great part of her personality. She whips that thing quickly and against the window it sounds like someone knocking on the door. LOL

My best wishes for a speedy recovery and Tom will be fine. He now has a unique quality not many have. =)

Re: The Tale of the Tail

My cat Mulato recently had to stay at the vet and when he came home his brother Rupert also hissed at him and wanted nothing to do with him. 3 days of that and they are best friends again.

So sorry to hear about Tom's tail mishap! I'm sure it was super stressful for you, too! Take care, and give him a scratch from all of us crazy cats in Ohio! =^..^=

Re: The Tale of the Tail

I was a volunteer with Cats in the Cradle at the Petsmart in Roswell for 5 years and one of our little kitties fell from the top of the cages one morning when everyone was out playing and he broke his tail at the base. It had to be amputated ($1500) and I was in way more agony over him than he ever was about himself because I loved him so much! He was adopted about a month later and the last I heard he was drinking water from a water glass on the table, having the pampered life he deserves with his resident kitty pals, and is no worse for wear because of what happened with his tail.

A friend of mine, who, like me, has 4 cats, had a session with an animal communicator via phone on Sunday afternoon and Judi (the animal communicator) told her that cats live only in the moment, not in the past or even in what happened 10 minutes ago, so maybe Tom has already erased the incident from his memory. If you're interested in a session with Judi, she can be contacted at animalechoes.com and she would be able to tell you what Tom wants to say/is thinking. She also communicates with pets who have passed away. I think it's $50 for an hour. Evidently she's been communicating with animals for 30 years or something and, according to my friend, was very "on target" with the things she said about my friend's cats, so I think I'm going to set up a session with her, too, for this week or next. Anyway, kisses and tummy rubs to your baby. He'll be just fine :-)

Re: The Tale of the Tail

Oh my! I know what your going thru. Years ago I had a dog that went through the same thing - his tail got slammed shut in the door by a friend of my then-boyfriend. It was horrible and one of the worst cries that can come from a dogs mouth! I remember running from my living room into the backroom to where the sound was coming from and when the guy realized what he did - he hurried and opened the door and my poor puppy came running like a little tazmanian devil - he came running and jumped into my arms, as fast as he could! He was so out of breath and his poor heart was just beatng so fast - I spent the next 1/2 hr comforting him and gently rubbing his tail - luckily in the end his tail ended up being fine and just a little crooked - but he never had any other problems than that, thank goodness. Hope your kitty is doing better and give him plenty of get-well chin scratches from "paws around the world" (and Bonnie and Clyde >^..^< )

Re: The Tale of the Tail

So sorry to hear about Tom and I am sure he will be fine. I hope your mother is ok also. As for Bella hissing at him you might want to try rubbing a towel all over her to get her scent and then rub it on Tom. She will calm down. Whenever I have had to take one of my babies to the vet I make sure to rub a towel on the other 13 and when I bring the one home I rub that same towel on him/her. It stops all the hissing, growls and potential fights because they will "recognize" the sick baby as one of the pack because of the smells. I think Bella is hissing because Tom doesn't "smell" like Tom. He had picked up all the scents and smells from the vets.

Re: The Tale of the Tail

So sorry to hear of Tom's mishap. It sounds like you had a great Vet to tend to him. I'm sure he will be fine. One think with amputations, he might still think his tail is longer, and you might catch him licking air, because he can still feel it. I'm told that is what happens with people too, the limb or whatever still feels there for a long time. Give him some love from us, and I'll remember him in my cat prayers.

Re: The Tale of the Tail

I'm sorry to hear about Tom's tail. One of my cats was born without a tail so I know how it is. He doesn't seem to care much that he doesn't have a tail or I should say a long tail like everyone else.

Re: The Tale of the Tail

AWW! Poor kitty! I'm so sorry that happened! He will be fine though and completely recover. When I was a kid I had a little Chihuahua and Cocker Spaniel mix puppy and I accidentally ran over his tail with a skate board. He yelped and was really sad for a couple of hours but he was completely fine after that except for a crooked tail. He even kept riding on the skate board with me! :) It just makes them unique and you will always remember how strong and resilient your kitty was during a terrible time.

Hugs and pets to Tom!

Re: The Tale of the Tail

Oh , i'm so sorry.. i'm sure you are ALL traumatized and alot sleep deprived...unfortunately, things like this happen, it's only because our animals loves us, and are right there at our "heels" at the most unexpected times.. he's in good hands.. he will be just fine, and after awhile he will "forget", and yes, he will "forgive: poor mom too.. take-care, and Please keep us posted.. Hugs, ~Dana >^..^<

Re: The Tale of the Tail

Poor Tom. I know how your Mom feels. Our 10 yr black/white short hair cat, Zeus, had the same thing happen. I went to close our 1/2 bath door & he decided at the last minute to dart out of the bath. Needless to say, I shut the door on the end of his tail & the vet ended up amputating about 2 inches. When he came home from the vet, he must have smelled like the animals at the vet because our other 3 cats refused to have anything to do with him for about 3 days. After that everything was back to normal & he had forgiven me. Give Tom lots of love for all of us. Keep us posted. Cathy

Re: The Tale of the Tail

Thank God Tom has you to take care of him like you did! I was feeding a feral cat who's tail was just dangling and the vet advised me to just let it fall off instead of trapping her and taking her in. Can't imagine how horrible it must have been for her but she did heal on her own so he should be just fine especially with the treatment he received. Pet his "phantom tail" for me!

Re: The Tale of the Tail

A door slammed one spring day on our Siamese's tail and we did the whole thing with surgery and the Elizabethian collar. We were more upset about than she was. She was a great old gal and lived to be eighteen. She ended up having to have one of her eyes removed and that didin't phase her either. She was a good role model for me in that she didn't resist she just accepted what is.

Re: Tale of the Tail

OH NO! You too?! I slammed 4 inches of our Great Danes tail in the CAR door!!!! It was horrible we all screamed. Rosie was fine after a minute but wouldn't quit wagging it! The blood was flying getting slung EVERYWHERE! I'm just glad the police didn't come by -they would have thought we had murdered someone!!! Rosies is fine with her new 5" shorter tail -and it doesn't hurt as bad when she whips it!!!
