| Nov 11 Written by:aajoanne Tuesday, November 11, 2008 Thanks to member Labdp for her contributions to our blog! As much as she would probably hate to admit it, my daughter is a lot like me. Granted, she's 21 and wears a Mohawk, and I'm 50 and wouldn't be caught dead in one, but our hearts are of the same maker.
She was telling me that recently a neighbor came to her door and asked if they had a large black lab with an orange collar. She said yes. The neighbor said Decoy was loose and heading down the block. He's having trouble understanding the whole stay inside the fence concept. So off she goes yelling and running after him.
Down the block and through the intersection they both run. She's calling his name, and no response whatsoever. You know that selective hearing dogs can have. She gets up to the dog, who cringes and cowers on her approach and she snags it by the collar. Only then to realize the dog in her grasp is not Decoy at all. Her response at that point is ohcrap, now what do I do?
As she ponders this, and heads back up the hill, with reluctant dog in tow, a man starts yelling, don't let that dog go!!! The owner of the other black lab in the neighborhood was approaching.
Now maybe Decoy wanders because of a lovely female black lab named Sugar in the neighborhood. Or maybe his nose just gets the best of him. What make me smile is that my daughter is more like me than not. And we've been a long time getting to that point. And it's nice to know that good people run after their dogs, or dogs who just look like their dogs.

I just love the mother/daughter description! I swear! I think you live in MY house!!!! lol Glad your daughter got the dog back with the owner!!! It does seem that no matter what the differences, if these kids are raised in a dog loving home........they are dog lovers! and that's a great thing!!

Re: Black Dog - Orange Collar
That story immediately caught my eye! I just had to read the rest and glad that I did. Very enjoyable. Thanks for the laugh-I could picture the whole thing. My older daughter, who lives in Iowa, but at the time of this story, was living in rural Arkansas, was trying to think of a name for her new kitten (this was several years ago).I suggested she name him, "Taxi", I thought it would be funny. She named him Taxi. Can you imagine HER running down the street in rural Arkansas yelling, "TAXI " !!" ?. I'm sure her neighbors were puzzled by her calling out for a taxi, every so often! Priscilla

LOL !!!, HEE, HEE, HEE. Thank you for the belly laugh. You have a very good daughter. I have neighbors who do not go after thier animals. Why last year the ASPCA took 20 dogs out of thier back yard. They had been inbreeding them for years. I am sad to say they have started re-breeding again. I guess the ASPCA will be making anoher house call. LIke I said,, you have a very good daughter. Loved your story.

You have brought up a wonderful memory as well as good laughs! I too have a daughter - she is 12 and I read this aloud. We are going through our journey of identification. We also have afunny story about Buddy, abig 'ol black lab who usedto amble across the street (in rural NC) to mooch snacks and have sleepovers! Perhaps I'll write it up someday!

Re: Black Dog - Orange Collar
I have a black lab myself. I would be greatful if someone went boundfully chasing after him if he got out. You can always pick out the animal lovers. It amazes me though that the neighbor who came to warn her didn't do anything.

Re: Black Dog - Orange Collar
OH, I too once had a big ole beautiful black Lab named, "Peanut", if he had EVER somehow managed to escape, I would have loved someone like your daughter to rescue him from harm. It says a great deal about your daughter's character and also a great deal about the character of the person who did nothing. My Peanut is no longer with me after 13 years, only in my heart and in my dreams. But, people like your daughter and we other animal lovers will live on and continue to enjoy and help each other and their pet friends. God Bless! What a heart warming story. Thanks! Made me think of my big guy in another light.

Re: Black Dog - Orange Collar
Thanks for the heartwaming story! I have a son who turned out to be a wonderful, kind animal lover and I feel especially proud of him for that. He now lives far away from me in NY but will frequently call to update me on all his rescues and animal adventures. It so reminds me of myself at that age and it just warms my heart. Merry Christmas everyone!
