| Nov 21 Written by:aajoanne Friday, November 21, 2008 Thanks to member Labdp for her contributions to our blog! They say cats dislike bath's more than dogs, but I'm not so sure. Only one of my dogs loved the water so much a bath was not torture. My lab, Abby, would calmly climb in the tub for bathing.
All of the others have to be tricked into the bathroom and lifted into the tub. Personally, I think that a pointer with his legs spread eagle has the wing span, or leg span, of a wandering albatross. What exactly is the wing span of a wandering albatross you might ask? Roughly 12-13 ft, or the equivalent of Sidney's legs.
I mention this little known fact after bathing Sidney today. Actually, we've been calling him Shidney lately. It's a fitting nickname for him. Imagine the God Father in a trench coat with a cigar sauntering up and saying "how ya doin Shid?" Anyway, a dietary indiscretion necessitated a bath this afternoon. It's only his second a bath since he's been with us, and the first bath inside that scary little room Mom goes into a closes the door. He was scared, but tolerated the water torture very well. If you overlook the fact that his tail was tucked clear to his nose.
I will say when he got out of the tub he did not shake at all. That was a nice treat, and easy on the full length mirror. It certainly wasn't in Shidney's plans for the afternoon, but you gotta do what you gotta do. When Mom says it's bath time, there is no escaping it. He's seen all the others dogs go in that room dry and come out wet - it was only a matter of time.

Re: Reluctant At Best
Ah yes, bath time. Shidney will get used to this adventure. My Sophie is a lab mix, she is 13, and by now I do not have to coax her into the tub. Although, she does drape her upper chest and front legs into the tub, I do have to lift her hiney into the tub (she is getting on in years, and she needs mama's help) . When she is in a less than cooperative mood, I hold a turkey (97% fat free) in front of her nose and she is very agreeable to her bathtime. Good luck Shidney!

Baths and dogs are a mystery to me! How is it that they can LOVE to swim but act like a bath is a bad thing!? My guys never have gotten to where they "like" the bath...We'll see what Sidney figures out!! Keep us posted...

Re: Reluctant At Best
Does Shidney like the AFTER-bath? My three will sit there moping while they are washed and dried. Then, they zip around the house all super-happy and playful. It's as if the bath itself is pure torture, but they like having already had the bath.

Lol @ you Mividasophia!! I was thinking if I held a turkey in the tub I'd have no problem getting Sidney in at all. But frankly, there is no room for Sid, me and a 97% fat free bird in the bathroom.

Re: Reluctant At Best
my chessie loves his baths. we started to bath him as a pup and now when he see me getting his towels out he goes right upstairs and gets into the tub for his shower. I think that the early training did the trick

With my son's dog Sable, I call it the four paw stop. We have shower doors and when she doesn't want a bath she sticks all four of her legs out and completely stops it. 'Bout knock me on my butt the first time I gave her one.

Re: Reluctant At Best
We have a golden retriever (10 mo. old, 95 lbs) and getting him into the tub is so hard. It's also hard to keep him in with the shower curtain so we started taking him to my parent's house because they have shower doors that he can't escape from. He does, however, absolutely LOVE being blow dried afterwards. Then we can all relax and forgive eachother for the hardships during the bath.

Re: Reluctant At Best
Odin knows when its bathtime and he gets THAT face. Its something similair to the "whyyy. why would you do this to me". I have to carry him in the tub and when hes in, hes searching for any possible exit. Afterward is drying time. Though it may seem he hates the blow dryer, after the bath he goes and sits on the mat waiting to be blow dried. (he has to be blow dried or else he shakes and shivers and gets a cold) and then, just like Yurimaru's pups, he zooms around the house and drags his face on the carpet. :] silly little pups.

Re: Reluctant At Best
Basenji's hate to get wet or even walk where its wet. My two won't even go out if we've had a heavy dew over night and the deck is damp. When I first tried bathing them them would wiggle, squirm and cry like i was going to ill them. I fainaaly wound up taking them to a recommended groomer and she has had success with them. The groomer has to put both of them in the tub at the same time with short leads hooked on to the hooks in the wall. They sit there and whine to each other about the "torture' they are undergoing. But once the get in the drying box with the warm air blowing on them they are as happy as kids at a party. They love the warm air and will roll over to be sure all sides get it.

Re: Reluctant At Best
I have had some times washing some of the dogs that I have rescued over the years. Our kids found a baby calico kitten that we kept. Her name was Pooh Cat. When we bathed the dogs, she kept meowing and looking in. so one day I got brave and decided to wash Pooh. She loved it. She even let me hold her under the bath tub faucet to thoroughly rinse her off! I much prefered washing her than the dogs so I turned them over to hubby. LOL Pooh was a one of a kind cat. She passed over the Rainbow Bridge years ago. She loved walking on a leash or being tied out in the back yard to sun herself. I now have a toy poodle that loves to look in the tub when you are showering. So I am going to try her next bath in the tub and see if she likes it as much as she thinks she will.
Note: sure wish they had spell check on here!
