I saw this somewhere this week and thought it was a brilliant idea.  I'm in a flu fog, but I'll do my best to explain:

Have a holiday hayride on a farm and donate the proceeds to help animals.  organize (borrow, buy, create) light displays on trees, bldgs, etc.  Ask friends and family for help.  Take folks around the display on a haywagon.  Serve hot chocolate, maybe sell some items, etc.  Use the money in 2009 to help save lives!

i just posted this on zootoo.com {another animal lovers site that uses a point scale to pick a shelter to have a makeover}:

you could have a silent auction, people wanting to participate in the auction pay a small fee of $1 or $2 and try to win any number of items. these prizes could be something that doesn't cost you a thing, like a dog bath or snow shoveled - to prizes that cost a little, like a pet bed or gift basket {for these items i would set a starting bid of $25 or so} - and you could even ask local companies to donate items in exchange for free advertising, like free pet grooming or free gourmet dog treats.
