Because Your Dog's Sleep is Important Too

Dog beds are an important item for every dog to have, yet it doesn't seem that the majority of dogs do have their own beds. Why is this? It could be for a variety of reasons; it seems that many people, perhaps yourself included, have underestimated the importance of dogs having a place of their own to sleep at night and for their frequent naps throughout the day. Many people don't buy pet beds because they either don't see it as that important or don't care to spend the money to buy one. Either way, by not providing your dog with his own place to sleep you are depriving him (and possibly yourself as well) valuable hours of comfortable, sound sleep at night.

What Type of Pet Bed to Consider

You don't have to be a professional when it comes to shopping for good dog beds. While fancy dog beds and designer dog beds are nice, you don't have to go that far. Those tend to be more expensive in the long run anyway, and if your dog doesn't have a bed of his own now chances are that he will gladly take anything. Many people look into unique dog beds, as unique as their canine friend but again all of that is not necessary unless you want to treat your four-legged friend to something extra special. All that matters is that they have a cozy bed, a place to curl up and go to sleep without putting your feet to sleep or stealing your pillow for comfort.

When Dog Beds Start to Get Pricey

In most cases, dog beds are very well-priced. They are built to last if you purchase quality and they are usually pretty easily washed as well, so that can help anyone deal much better with the dog situation. Many people picture dog beds as furry, flea-infested stink bombs that should be hidden in the corner and while it is true that some dogs out there have bends like that, your dog doesn't have to. If you must coordinate your pets bed with your décor, there are plenty of fancy dog beds out there that are built to blend in like dog furniture. At the same time, designer dog beds can make any dog like chic and pampered—as if they weren't anyway. If you have underestimated the importance of a good bed for your dog, perhaps you should rethink that. Dog beds can give your pet a comfortable nest to curl up in and stay out of your hair and it can also give them a place that they would rather sleep than your bed; doesn't that sound like a good deal in itself? Also, never underestimate that even if you have to spend a few extra dollars on heated dog beds, as you may find this a necessity for them because your pet is in need of a little therapy, don’t scrimp here. We are talking about your pets’ health after all you know.

Having a quiet corner and a dog bed is great, but having a big king size bed to sleep in with blankets and pillows, I would think is better.

I have to agree. My dog has two really good dog beds - one upstairs and one downstairs, but there is nothing like a nice, big bed with big blankets to make life HEAVEN! My dog is in heaven every night.

True, a dog should have his own bed.
At times my Pebbles likes to sleep in her dogbed during the day for a nap or on the sofa.
At night she snuggles on my bed with me.

It would be a waste of money for me even if I bought the cheapest one our ther.My dog has to sleep with me. She waits until I get settle in and then lays down so her back if up against my legs. She is still in the protective mode even at night.

As much as I love my dog and would do anything for her, I truly do believe there is nothing like a good dog bed where she can rest and curl up on her own. I tried the in my bed thing and it doesn't work for me.

I spent over $100.00 for a special bed designed especially for an arthritic dogs. She looked at it, smelled it and walked away. I guess it was my body heat that she wanted.

A good dog bed is great. Crikey has a good one for the house, because he is an indoor dog and that is what he will lay on when I'm not around, but when i'm home in bed, he wants to be right there snuggled beside me. I think dogs in general just want to be close to the people that they love and that love them. I think its normal.

I have to agree with the thought that while it is nice to give your pet options, Manny has a pet bed that he will use when we are downstairs, but that gets totally ignored when we go upstairs. He is a rescue dog, so I don't know whether he just likes being close to me at night or whether my bed is just more comfortable, but he maintains contact throughout the night. If I shift and moved away, he re-adjusts and curls right back up against my legs.

Hmm, you have a point about being a rescue dog. Crikey is a rescue dog also and although he has beds in our room, kitchen, living room and SUV:-) When its time to go to bed he's like glue to me. I've learned creative ways to move my body so that I am able to get a restful night sleep and that Crikey feels safe also. Honestly, I've gotten so use to him being beside me that I can't sleep if he's there now..LOLOL!!

During the evening Bink and FiFi sleep on the papason (they love it). At night I don't even fight it they sleep with me and the cat.
But it is ok the bed is big enough for us all.

ILucky is a rescue dog also he has a nice bed of his own but he sleeps with me at night and when I m on the computer he sleeps on my bed instead of his. But that is okay I couldn't sleep if he wasn't there.

Yes, my dogs have beds, and they are mine!

I'm trying to find a bed that my dog won't eat. She's a purebred St. Bernard and just turend 2yrs old. My bed unfortunately, is not an option. I am allergic and another body on that bed along with my husband and myself wouldn't leave us much room, Diamond weighs approx 130lbs, so I would love a suggestion for a nice place she can curl up on that she won't rip and tear out the insides.

To respond to diadraven9's query, and by no means is this an expert opinion, I have an idea.

Try to pick up a nice cheapy bed that has some cushion and is comfortable, then cover that bed in some of your (and your husband's) old t-shirts/pajamas, etc. Something that has your scent on it, that your dog will recognize and welcome. He may not be as apt to try and chew it up if the bed smells like you, may be worth a shot.

My dog has her own beds in the den and in my bedroom but she never sleeps on them. She sleeps under the coffee table in the den or on the floor beside my bed. She used to sleep with me but she has gotten too old to on and off the bed by herself and I don't want her to get hurt.

By kittypoop7 @ Monday, May 05, 2008 5:31 PM
My dogs don't have their own beds because they would EAT them. But they are plenty comfy on the couch and on my bed.

By Crystals_mom @ Thursday, August 07, 2008 8:01 PM
my dog would pull the stuffing out of any dog bed we got her. when she was little and slept in the crate at night , we would have to remove the bed when we let her out in the morning, or she would go in, pull the dog bed out of the crate, and start using it as a chew toy! She loves pulling stuffing out of our quilts too!
